How to Edit and Convert MTS Files?

What is MTS?
AVCHD was jointly established by Sony Corporation and Panasonic Corporation in 2006 for use in their digital tapeless camcorders. The AVCHD format records video using the MPEG-4 AVC/H.264 video codec, and audio in Dolby AC-3.
MTS and M2TS are both file extensions for AVCHD. AVCHD (Advanced Video Coding High Definition) is a file-based format for the digital recording and playback of high-definition video.
Though both MTS and M2TS are file extensions for the same AVCHD and both support 720p and 1080i HD video formats, there is a slight difference between the two. In the M2TS file, the video file is saved in the high definition Blue-ray BDAV format.
What is iMovie?
1: Easily import footage from digital camcorders and still cameras (that support video capture)
2: Organize your video in a central repository, across your Mac or on external hard drives
3: Gather, view, edit, and share your edited movie files
4: Create movie files that include music, sound effects, themes, menus, titles, transitions, and other effects
5: Save your edited movies onto physical media such as a DVD, CD or as a file on a hard drive
6: Share your movies on the Internet through services such as MobileMe Gallery, YouTube, and personal web sites
7: iMovie works effortlessly with other Apple applications including QuickTime, iDVD, iPhoto, iWeb, iTunes and with other Mac OS X applications.
What is AVI?
Audio Video Interleave, known by its acronym AVI, is a multimedia container format introduced by Microsoft in November 1992 as part of its Video for Windows technology.ow that is the author.
What is MOV?
QuickTime (.mov) is a media container format. It functions as a multimedia container file that contains one or more tracks, each of which store a particular type of data, such as audio, video, effects, or text.
MOV video file is common multimedia format often used for saving movies and other video files, uses a proprietary compression algorithm developed by Apple Computer, compatible with both Macintosh and Windows platforms. The format specifies a multimedia container file that contains one or more tracks, each of which stores a particular type of data: audio, video, effects, or text (e.g. for subtitles).
Each track contains track media, either the digitally-encoded media stream (using a specific codec such as Cinepak, Sorenson codec, MP3, JPEG, DivX, or PNG) or a data reference to the media stored in another file or elsewhere on a network. Quicktime is a closed source, propriety format that cannot be manipulated. It is considered suitable for editing.
